We excavate to real depth and build a compacted gravel base in lifts, tamping each layer so the ground underneath can’t telegraph its movement up through the pavers. A bedding layer screeded flat sets the stones level, polymeric sand locks the joints, and edge restraints hold the whole field from spreading. On a slope we pitch the surface to carry water off and away from the house instead of toward the foundation.
