Dethatching in Springfield
Thatch is the layer of dead stems and roots that builds up between the green grass and the soil. A little is healthy. More than a half inch sheds water before it reaches the roots, hides insects, and holds the moisture fungal disease loves. If your lawn feels spongy underfoot, that is thatch. Summit Lawn Care pulls that layer with a power rake, then hauls off the debris.
The older lawns build it fastest. The Westgate ranches, decades of growth without ever being raked out, often run well past the half-inch line. The shaded downtown lots stay damp under the mature trees, which slows the breakdown and lets thatch and moss pile up together. Newer Route 9 lawns rarely need it yet, since the turf has not been down long enough. We dethatch in the growing season so the lawn recovers fast.
Once the thatch is gone, aeration and overseeding and our fertilization program finally reach soil instead of stopping at the spongy layer. The full service is on our dethatching page, with everything local at the Springfield hub.
