Dethatching in Maplewood
Thatch is the spongy mat of dead stems and roots that builds up between the green grass and the soil. A thin layer is healthy. Once it passes a half inch, it sheds water before it reaches the roots and gives insects and fungus a place to hide. The older established lawns near the center of town are where we see it worst, often after years of mowing without ever pulling the mat back out.
You can feel it underfoot: the lawn bounces like a carpet pad, and water beads on top after you run the sprinkler. We power-rake the lawn to lift that mat out, then haul off the debris so the crowns sit on soil again and air gets down to the roots.
Dethatching opens the door for aeration and overseeding and a round of fertilization to take hold. The full method is on our dethatching page, with every local service on the Maplewood hub.
