Dethatching in Cedar Grove
Thatch is the layer of dead stems and roots that builds up between the green grass and the soil. A little is healthy. More than about a half inch starts working against you, because a thick thatch mat sheds water before it reaches the roots and holds moisture up top where fungus likes it. The older brick-ranch lawns in the flatter subdivision sections are the usual suspects, since decades of growth pile up faster than they break down.

Push a finger down to the soil. If you hit a spongy brown layer first and the grass feels like it’s growing on a mattress, you have too much thatch. On compacted clay the better long-term move is often core aeration, which breaks thatch down naturally by mixing soil into it, so we’ll tell you straight which one your lawn actually needs.
