Dethatching in Fairview
Thatch is the spongy brown mat of old stems and roots that builds up between the green grass and the soil. A thin layer is normal and even helpful. Once it passes about a half inch, it starts shedding water before it reaches the roots, and fertilizer sits on top of it instead of soaking in. You can feel it underfoot: the lawn goes springy, almost like walking on a mattress.
Heavy thatch shows up most on the established lawns near the school, where years of growth have piled up faster than it breaks down. It also traps moisture against the crowns of the grass, which gives fungal lawn disease a damp place to start in humid stretches.
Pulled Out, Not Scalped In
We run a machine with vertical blades that comb through the turf and lift the thatch to the surface, where we rake it up and haul it off. It is a rough day for the lawn and a great one for the next month, since water, air, and feeding finally reach the soil. Early fall is the best time for cool-season grass, so the lawn has the whole cool stretch to bounce back.
Dethatching pairs perfectly with aeration and overseeding, since both open the lawn up at once, and a follow-up fertilization program feeds the recovery. The full process is on our dethatching page, with all our Fairview services at Fairview.
