Aeration & Overseeding in Lakeside
Two Lakeside problems trace back to the same fix. The tear-down rebuilds along the shore sit on compacted clay fill that water and roots cannot get through, and the shaded lots under the maples grow thin and patchy where foot traffic packs the soil hard. Core aeration relieves both, and seeding into the holes is what actually thickens the lawn.
How Core Aeration Works
We pull plugs of soil rather than just poking holes, because solid-tine spiking compresses the walls and makes compaction worse. The plugs leave channels that let air, water, and fertilizer reach the roots, and they break down on the surface within a couple of weeks. Right after we aerate, we overseed, dropping fresh seed that falls into the open holes where it stays moist and makes good contact with soil. On the shaded slopes we lean on grass blends built to handle low light.
Early fall is the prime window here. Pair it with a fertilization feeding to power the new seedlings, and if thatch is part of the problem, dethatching comes first. More on the aeration and overseeding page and the Lakeside hub.
